I have been watching more of Mark Crilley’s tutorial videos on youtube and trying to sketch things out as I go. He explains things in a really common sense way that doesn’t condescend newcomers and beginners like myself, you should definately go check him out if you want some help in learning how to draw manga!

Practicing my manga sketches, I swear one day I’ll be good at it.

My first ever manga sketch, digitized on photoshop. Decided to experiment a little with texture overlays, and did a little shading to give it some depth. Again all credit should go to Mark Crilley for the original sketch tutorial, as can be seen in my earlier post here. Go check him out!

I’ve always been bad terrible at drawing, but I’ve always wanted to get better at it. I had thought that I was doomed to be completely talentless with a pencil for all time. But thanks to some very awesome people on YouTube I’m getting back into drawing and realising slowly that maybe I’m not all that bad, I just never tried enough. I followed this tutorial by the legendary Todd McFarlane about how to draw faces/placement of facial features,
and I managed to come up with this:

Which for me, is a massive achievement. Anyone who has seen anything else I’ve ever drawn will know how much of a miracle it is that this even looks vaguely human. I know it’s not actually ‘good’ but I’m happy with my progress.

I also followed this awesome video by Mark Crilley about how to draw a Manga-style face, I found it really helpful so check it out.

This is what I ended up with, the eyes are a bit rubbish but apart from that I think it looks good enough for me!

With some of the principles I’d learnt I decided to do a sketch portrait of Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy 7, as I’ve been playing it a fair bit recently. Here’s how it turned out:

I know this may not seem like much to a lot of people, but the amount of progress it resembles for me is awesome! Looking forward to getting some of these digitized and experiment with inking etc. Only need a graphics tablet now!
